Learning Portuguese Before Moving to Portugal: Your 6-Month Plan
The single best thing you can do before moving to Portugal costs nothing and fits in your pocket: start Portuguese now. Movers who land with A2 basics report a completely different first year — easier bureaucracy, faster friendships, less isolation. Here's a 6-month plan that works alongside visa paperwork.
Months 1–2: Sound and survival
- Learn the European Portuguese sound system first — nasal vowels (ão, õe) and swallowed unstressed vowels.
- Master 150 survival phrases: greetings, ordering, numbers, prices, directions.
- Daily habit: 15 minutes, no exceptions. The habit matters more than the content.
Months 3–4: Structure and vocabulary
- Present tense of the 20 most common verbs; introduce past tense (pretérito perfeito).
- Grow vocabulary to ~800 words with spaced-repetition flashcards.
- Start listening practice daily — native audio at natural speed, even if you only catch 30%.
Months 5–6: Conversation and real life
- Daily speaking practice: rehearse café, pharmacy, landlord and AIMA scenarios out loud.
- Learn bureaucracy vocabulary: morada (address), agendamento (appointment), comprovativo (proof document).
- Add culture: knowing about fado, festas and football gives you small-talk material from day one.
How much Portuguese is "enough" to land with?
A2 is the sweet spot: you can handle daily interactions, understand slow clear speech and keep learning fast once immersed. It's also exactly the level Portugal requires for citizenship later — so nothing is wasted.
