English works in tourist areas of Portugal — but a few phrases of Portuguese change how your trip feels. Prices soften, smiles widen, service warms up. Here are the phrases worth learning, with European pronunciation.

At the café (where you'll live)

One pronunciation warning
Phrasebooks written for Brazilian Portuguese will teach you pronunciations that sound odd in Portugal. Final s is "sh" (duas = "doo-ash"), and unstressed vowels nearly vanish. Learn from Portugal-recorded audio and locals will understand you first try.
