Vilamoura and Algarve Golf: Courses, Seasons and Living There

The Algarve is one of Europe's premier golf destinations, and Vilamoura is its densest concentration — five courses inside a single resort development, plus the region's biggest marina. It has hosted the Portugal Masters on the European Tour since 2007.

What Vilamoura is

Vilamoura is unusual in Portugal: an entirely purpose-built resort, master-planned from the 1960s onward rather than grown from an old fishing town. That gives it wide roads, abundant parking and modern infrastructure — and, depending on taste, less character than Tavira or Lagos.

The marina is the largest in Portugal with roughly 1,000 berths, ringed by restaurants and bars. There's genuine history too: Cerro da Vila, a Roman villa complex with mosaics and baths, sits right beside the marina and is regularly overlooked by visitors.

Beyond Vilamoura

• Quinta do Lago (Almancil) — South, North and Laranjal. The South course is among the most celebrated in Europe and has hosted multiple Portuguese Opens.
• San Lorenzo — bordering the Ria Formosa nature reserve, consistently rated among the continent's finest and often quieter than its neighbours.
• Vale do Lobo — the Royal and Ocean courses. The Royal's par-3 16th, played across cliffs above the sea, is the most photographed hole in Portugal.
• Monte Rei (eastern Algarve) — a Jack Nicklaus Signature course routinely ranked number one in Portugal. Remote, exclusive and the most expensive round in the region.
• Palmares (Lagos) — links-style with wide views over Meia Praia, in the western Algarve.

When to play

Golf in the Algarve inverts the usual tourist calendar.

Peak golf season is autumn and spring, when northern Europe is unplayable and the Algarve is around 20°C. Summer is cheap for golf precisely because midday rounds are punishing.

What it costs

Green fees vary enormously by course and season. As a rough guide, expect somewhere around €80–150 for a Vilamoura round in mid-season, considerably less in deep summer or winter, and up to €250 or more at the very top end such as Monte Rei. Twilight rates, multi-round passes and resort packages cut costs substantially, and residents can access annual memberships that change the maths entirely.

Rates change every season, so confirm directly with the course rather than relying on published figures.

Living in Vilamoura

Property runs from marina apartments to villas on the fairways, and prices sit at the upper end of the Algarve — comparable to Almancil, below Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. What you get is convenience: everything is close, modern and well maintained.

The honest drawbacks are the ones common to purpose-built resorts. It's strongly seasonal, and quieter in winter than a real town. It's expensive relative to the rest of the region. And it's overwhelmingly international, so you'll hear more English than Portuguese — good for arriving, less good for integrating. Loulé, ten minutes inland, is a proper Portuguese town with a famous market, and many residents split their lives between the two.
