Portuguese Verb Conjugation Guide (European Portuguese)

Portugal Lifestyle Pro · Updated 2026-07-11

Portuguese verbs scare beginners — six persons, many tenses, irregulars everywhere. But there's a shortcut: a small set of patterns covers most of what you'll actually say. Here's the efficient path.

The three families

Regular verbs end in -ar (falar — to speak), -er (comer — to eat) or -ir (abrir — to open). Learn one model verb per family and you can conjugate thousands:

falarcomerabrir
eufalocomoabro
tufalascomesabres
ele/ela/vocêfalacomeabre
nósfalamoscomemosabrimos
eles/elasfalamcomemabrem

Note: in Portugal you'll use tu forms constantly — one more reason not to learn from Brazilian materials, which mostly skip them.

The irregular five you can't avoid

ser (to be, permanent), estar (to be, temporary), ter (to have), ir (to go), fazer (to do/make). These appear in almost every sentence. Drill them until they're reflexes — sou, estou, tenho, vou, faço.

Which tenses, in which order

  1. Present — covers the present and (with ir + infinitive) the future: vou falar = I'm going to speak.
  2. Pretérito perfeito — the everyday past: falei, comi, abri.
  3. Imperfeito — descriptions and habits in the past, and polite requests: queria um café.
  4. Everything else (future simple, subjunctive) can wait until B1.

How to actually memorise them

Conjugation tables don't stick from reading — they stick from retrieval. Daily micro-drills where you produce the form from a prompt (eu + fazer + past = ?) beat re-reading tables ten times over. Say them out loud with correct audio so the sound and spelling bond together.
